Synopsis
"When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who have escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living."

Review
This review will be the opposite of the book: short, sweet, and simple. Obviously, this book was not terrible.... No, it was MARVELOUS.
It was the first book I have read that was fast-paced and extremely intense from page 1. I started this almost a year ago, and I had to give it up because I was sucked into a reading slump that took me months to get out of—and I mean MONTHS. And it took me about a week to finish it. The best week ever.
For some odd reason, I had a hard time remembering the main character's name: Ruby. I remembered everyone's name, even Chubs, a.k.a Charles. Anyway, I just wanted to wrap Ruby up in a blanket and place by a fire with a hot cup of cocoa because she deserves it; she went through a lot.
Ruby is my beloved daughter. That poor child; I respect her and love her all around. She is one of the strongest characters that I have met. And Alexandra writes her emotions and feelings in a way that really hit you hard, and those words make you feel everything that Ruby feels. Good luck.
And Lee (a.k.a Liam). Oh golly; he is my child and possibly my second book boyfriend, but he is ranked first. Sorry Maven, you are second (I apologize to those who have read Red Queen. I cannot let go). He is such a lovable character. HE CARES SO MUCH ABOUT EVERYONE AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. He is so kind, mature, and has one heck of a mindset. And his motive is—oh my. Great.
Oh Chubs; you will end up loving him, I promise. His attitude has an explanation, an understandable one. He is one of those stubborn characters that I just absolutely love.
Zu. Oh gosh I wish I knew more about her. Maybe I will find out in the next book? But I love her friendship with Ruby—which is not a spoiler.
Anywho, I absolutely loved this book. The characters were not bland; they all had a personality that did not come out right away. It was amazing. They all seemed so real, which I appreciated. Thank you so much, Alex! And then the relationships that were built were heartwarming and—AHG—I just highly recommend this book. This book just did not disappoint. If you thought what a good book was before you read this book, you were wrong. You will not know what a good book is until you read this book. There is a reason why I quickly gave it a 5/5.
You will experience smiles, laughs, cringes (because of their actions), tantrums, and tears, but in the end, you will love it wholeheartedly. And you will end up with a new book boyfriend.
For those who have read Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard: you will meet Maven again.
Peace out, Nerds
